love letter to the multihyphenate creatives
"the biggest threat is not exploring and engaging in the full spectrum of your creativity" - Victoria Monet ✨
In my thirty-one years of existing, I’ve had what feels like nine lives already.
From being a babysitter and daycare teacher in my teens to juggling a 9-5 and a small business present day, needless to say each experience I’ve had unlocks a new skillset I didn’t even know existed. I had a manager who once described me as “equally right and left brained.” Turns out, she was describing my analytical yet creative nature that still felt too messy for me to name myself.
I later discovered that in human design theory, I’m what’s known as a manifesting generator (shoutout to my 2/4 MG’s!). Manifesting generators are those individuals who have multiple interests, careers, talents, skills, and embrace the fluidity of it all. It finally clicked for me that I’m meant to be “both/and” not “either/or” in all aspects and areas of my life. I spent most of my 20s trying to box myself in, only to later realize (through fuck-ups and detours) that I’m self-actualizing whenever I allow my curiosity and intention to guide my creative interests.
Here’s to all the different facets of me: scientist, public health researcher and scholar, grad school alumna, podcast host, creative director, business owner, speaker, writer, artist, mentor, content strategist, community builder, and so much more that I haven’t even explored yet.
This acceptance speech from Victoria Monet felt like a love letter to all the fellow multi hyphenates and poly creatives out there. It was a gentle reminder that there is no limitation to your creativity, and as my muse, Solange said: “I can’t be a singular expression of myself; there’s too many parts, too many spaces, too many manifestations, too many lines, too many curves, too many journeys, too many mountains, too many rivers, so many.”
Congratulations to the multi hyphenate queen, Victoria Monet for winning the Triple Threat award, c/o Variety Hitmakers.
